![]() Research Program Overview Research activities are an integral part of the activities of the faculty and trainees of the Division. The types of projects that are currently being conducted by the faculty range from bench research to the application of intervention programs, in areas such as risk behaviors, biological processes, health services and health policy. Examples of current projects include research describing the longitudinal histo-cytologic course of specific sub-types of human papillomavirus, bio-behavioral studies of stress reactivity during adolescence, evaluation research examining different tests and algorithms for STDs, clinical trials of the nicotine patch in adolescents, developmental research on psychological processes such as risk judgment, qualitative research on the culture of adolescent romance, studies on risk taking in homeless youth, the development and evaluation of interventions to prevent risk behaviors and their consequences in adolescents and in young adults, health services research on improving the delivery of care to adolescents, and research on important health policy issues affecting adolescents. Research is conducted with colleagues in a variety of other departments, centers and institutes, and schools at UCSF (Center for Health and Community, Institute for Health Policy Studies, School of Nursing), with colleagues at other regional institutions (University of California, Berkeley, School of Public Health, among others), and with colleagues in the community (Departments of Public Health, Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, among others). Our research programs are supported through grants from federal, state
and local agencies and foundations including Agency for Health care Research
and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC),
Department of Defense (DoD), federal Maternal Child Health Bureau (MCHB),
National Institutes of Health (NCI, NIAAA, NIAID, NICHD, NIDA), University
AIDS Research Program (University of California), American Cancer Society,
Tobacco-Related Disease Research Program (University of California), The
California Wellness Foundation, and the WT Grant Foundation,. For further
