Spina Bifida Program

The Spina Bifida Program is under the direction of Dr. Houtrow and is coordinated by Cindy Lazzaretti, RN.  Infants, children and adolescents with spina bifida and other forms of spinal dysraphisms receive comprehensive care from Pediatric Rehabilitation, Neurosurgery, Urology, Orthopedics, Development and Behavioral Pediatrics, Physical Therapy, Nutrition and Social Work.

Inpatient Services

For patients in the hospital, Dr Houtrow provides consultative services in addition to directing the comprehensive rehabilitation program.

Comprehensive Rehabilitation Program

Our comprehensive Inpatient Rehabilitative Services include three hours of therapy per day, six days per week and a coordinated team approach with:

  • Evaluation and planning meetings upon admission
  • Weekly team meetings
  • Family meetings
  • Discharge planning
  • Psychosocial support
  • Twenty four hour medical coverage from in hospital physicians
  • School program with special education teacher
  • Community re-entry
  • Complementary integrative health services
  • Spiritual Services

Facilities

Our Rehabilitation Unit is located in the nationally recognized UCSF Children’s Hospital with a pediatric gym, therapeutic pool, family resource room, All Star Computer Room, adaptive kitchen, playroom, school, and outdoor patio, with easy access to transportation and community activities. Rooming in is available for one care giver over the age of 18.  Limited family housing may be available upon request.

Pediatric Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Clinic

Dr. Houtrow sees patients in the Pediatric Specialties Clinic at 400 Parnassus 2nd floor. She provides consultations, inpatient follow-ups and continued care for infants, children and young adults with a wide range of congenital and acquired conditions resulting in functional limitations.Evaluation of therapy programs and equipment needs are also managed through the outpatient clinic with the input of physical and occupational therapists.Using the team approach, care is coordinated with a wide range of available medical, therapeutic, and support services.
