Development of the ICN at UCSF

1950s

Hyaline Membrane Disease recognized as main cause of neonatal death.

1960

Four premie babies with HMD ventilated in S.F. No survivors.

Review of this experience: “We need a completely different type of nursery where we can make continuous measurements of cardiorespiratory physiology at the bedside to guide care.”

- W. H. Tooley

1963-1964

CVRI sends a team led by Dr. Clements and Dr. Tooley to Singapore.

1964

Tooley et al return to UCSF and set up the research methods used in Singapore as patient care system. CVRI provides major support including blood gas lab next the nursery. Nursing provides the extra support. What was formerly a “premie” nursery is now an ICN.

Dr. Margolis (OB, UCSF) performs the first successful intrauterine transfusion in the U.S.

1965

The ICN expands to the delivery area with physiologic monitors and mini blood gas lab.
