Review of this experience: “We need a completely different type of nursery where we can make continuous measurements of cardiorespiratory physiology at the bedside to guide care.” - W. H. Tooley 1963-1964 CVRI sends a team led by Dr. Clements and Dr. Tooley to Singapore. 1964 Tooley et al return to UCSF and set up the research methods used in Singapore as patient care system. CVRI provides major support including blood gas lab next the nursery. Nursing provides the extra support. What was formerly a “premie” nursery is now an ICN. Dr. Margolis (OB, UCSF) performs the first successful intrauterine transfusion in the U.S. 1965 The ICN expands to the delivery area with physiologic monitors and mini blood gas lab.
