![]() Dr. Marion Koerper Marion Koerper is the Director of the Hemophilia Treatment Center which participates in numerous industry-sponsored clinical trials of factor concentrate products used to treat patients with hemophilia. Current and recent clinical trials have included safety and efficacy trials, trials of factor products treating patients undergoing surgery, and comparison trials of patients using prophylactic vs episodic treatment regimens. The Hemophilia Treatment Center is participating in a nationwide CDC-sponsored multi-year Universal Data Collection Program for people with bleeding disorders. The goal of this project is to improve the health of people with bleeding disorders by monitoring and developing prevention strategies for the two major health complications of people with bleeding disorders - bloodborne diseases and joint disease. In addition, the CDC is maintaining a serum bank of blood collected from study participants in order to be able to quickly investigate any new pathogens that might be spread through blood products. The Hemophilia Treatment Center is also participating in an NIH-sponsored study enrolling patients with hemophilia who are Hepatitis C positive. This study is looking at the complications associated with Hepatitis C disease as well as developing new laboratory tests that can be used to measure Hepatitis C infection and disease progression. Other research questions include looking at the characteristics of persons who naturally recover from Hepatitis C infection, the effect of Hepatitis B infection on Hepatitis C, and human genes that are associated with resistance to HIV and recovery from Hepatitis B and C and other conditions. A recent completely nationwide CDC study looked at the complications that patients with hemophilia have with implanted central lines. |
