Gastroenterology and Liver Practice

The pediatric gastroenterologists provide expertise in performing specialized procedures to help diagnose and treat a variety of gastrointestinal disorders. The procedures include upper endoscopy with biopsy, including the small intestine, stomach and esophagus; upper endoscopy with removal of foreign body, dilation of a stricture (typically in the esophagus), or placement of a gastrostomy tube; lower endoscopy (colonoscopy) with biopsies, including visualization of the ileum (end of the small intestine where Crohn’s disease is typically found); flexible sigmoidoscopy; percutaneous (skin level) liver biopsy; ERCP; breath hydrogen test for lactose intolerance or intestinal bacterial overgrowth; rectal biopsy for Hirschsprung’s disease; manometry of the esophagus and anorectum; and esophageal pH probe testing for gastroesophageal reflux. If you think you might need one of these procedures, you should discuss this with your child’s pediatrician and meet with one of our providers to consider the pros and cons of doing the tests.

Preparing for Your Child's Visit

Please bring with you:

  • A current list of the medications your child is taking including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal products.
  • A list of questions and concerns to make sure we cover everything during your appointment.
  • Your child's doctor may have already sent us your child's records but, if you have copies, we'd like you to bring them in case we don't have them yet.
  • Your insurance card and co-payment if required and an authorization if needed.
  • A form for all new patients is helpful to complete; if you have not received this before your visit, you can complete the form while waiting to see your doctor.

Your Appointment

During your child's appointment, your child will be evaluated by a doctor or by a nurse practitioner supervised by a specialist. You will be asked about your child's medical history and he or she will be given a physical examination. The doctor or nurse practitioner will discuss your child's problem in detail with you and talk with you about potential next steps. All of your treatment will be reviewed and authorized by a board-certified pediatric gastroenterology specialist. As a result of this visit, the doctor or nurse practitioner may schedule certain tests for your child.

Financial Issues

UCSF Children's Hospital and its physicians accept all types of insurance.

If you are covered by a health maintenance organization (HMO) you must have an authorization from your health plan before your child's appointment. Most HMOs will not issue authorizations at the time of an appointment. Without an authorization, you have the choice of rescheduling the appointment or being seen and assuming financial responsibility for the appointment and testing.

California Children's Services (CCS) is a state and federally funded program to assist families with the finances of health care for certain childhood illnesses. Both medical and financial eligibility criteria must be met per CCS requirements. Please ask your primary medical doctor, pediatric nurse practitioner, or social worker for more information and/or a referral to CCS.
