![]() Giving
Private contributions have helped create high-quality patient care, research, and physician training programs in the Division of Pediatric Gastroenterology/Nutrition at UCSF Children’s Hospital. Our doctors, nurses, and health care professionals are known for their pioneering work—resulting in improved outcomes for children with gastrointestinal problems including inflammatory bowel disease, intestinal failure, liver disease, and nutritional deficiencies. But your ongoing support is needed to sustain the compassionate care
and innovative research that has brought hope to the children and families
we serve. A gift to the Pediatric Gastroenterology and Nutrition Fund
is an investment in the future—a future we hope will be devoid of
these devastating illnesses. Endowment Fund for Research in Pediatric Gastroenterology/ Nutrition The UCSF Pediatric Gastroenterology/Nutrition Endowment Fund has paved the way for new and exciting research projects initiated by our trainees. A recent graduate of our program just published a research study describing a possible underlying cause for biliary atresia, a devastating liver disease. Current trainees with research supported by this fund are investigating such subjects as predisposing factors for surgery in inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis), development of liver fibrosis (leading to cirrhosis and liver failure), new treatments for gastroesophageal reflux, and the use of complementary and alternative medical therapies (such as herbs, vitamins, or acupuncture) in children with gastrointestinal disorders. These projects and subsequent programs that continue after trainees graduate from our Program are possible with your support of the UCSF Pediatric Gastroenterology/Nutrition Endowment Fund. Center for Research and Education for Pediatric Inflammatory Bowel Disease Physicians training in our Pediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and
Nutrition program are excited to learn about and participate in opportunities
to improve basic and clinical knowledge of inflammatory bowel disease
in children. A national consortium of six major pediatric inflammatory
bowel disease centers, including UCSF, has been developing a registry
of patients to learn about the natural history of the diseases in children
and to develop new treatment options. Our first major research paper has
been accepted for publication in the Journal of Pediatrics, one
of the premier pediatric journals in the world. Further, one of our trainees
is now involved in research in this area, a new trainee will begin training
in a basic science (immunology laboratory) investigating inflammatory
bowel disease in July 2005, and we continue to receive increasing inquiries
regarding training and career opportunities due to the increased visibility
of our expanded program in inflammatory bowel disease. Several new grants
to our program from the NIH are aimed at this effort as well. Pediatric Nutrition Research Program To continue the work that produced the book Feeding Your Child for Lifelong Health, written by Drs. Melvin Heyman and Susan Roberts and published in 1999, a postdoctoral trainee—supported entirely by funds from the Pediatric GI/Nutrition Endowment Fund—is conducting studies in pediatric nutrition. We have initiated a large study on the effects of nutrition education on mothers of newborn babies; the study will also assess behavioral influences in development of nutrient deficiencies and obesity. In addition, we are embarking on a recently funded project to investigate nutrition programs, including school meals, in the San Francisco public school system. Your support has made these efforts possible. Please print, complete, and include the form with your gift.
Please also see the UCSF Foundation Website for more information about giving. Thank you for your support. |
