Theresa A. Tacy, M.D.
Dr. Tacy's clinical activity centers on diagnosing structural and functional cardiovascular abnormailities using echocardiography. She works mainly in the echocardiography laboratory and fetal cardiovascular program, supporting the needs of the inpatient and outpatient clinical services, including the operating rooms, the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit, and the Intensive Care Nursery. Dr. Tacy’s main research interests in the cardiovascular field are in fluid dynamics and cardiac mechanics, specifically in single ventricle palliation, and the alterations that are incurred by the surgical alterations imposed upon the cardiovascular system. We perform very detailed analyses of afterload and of cardiac function in the catheterization lab in selected patients. These measures are widely accepted as the “gold standard” in the adult cardiac physiologic circles, but less utilized amongst pediatric cardiologists. Clinical research design has long been a significant interest of Dr. Tacy’s, who holds an MS in Biostatistics and Clinical Research Design from the University of Michigan. She is quite active in teaching the development of a research idea into a polished protocol to fellows in training, and then sees the study through to its completion. She also serves on the Committee for Human Research.
