The 4th year fellowship at UCSF in pediatric and adult congenital interventional cardiology was established in 1995 to train pediatric cardiologists in advanced catheterization techniques for the treatment of congenital heart disease. The goal of the program is to provide hands on training in all aspects of interventional cardiac catheterization of children and adults with congenital heart disease while providing an opportunity to perform research in the field of interventional catheterization and develop teaching skills through work with junior fellows, residents and medical students. The fellowship is a 1-year commitment beginning the first of July and finishing the end of June the following year. Applicants must successfully complete 3 years of cardiology fellowship prior to starting this program and be board eligible. Applications consist of a curriculum vitae with three letters of recommendation that can be submitted electronically through e-mail. We accept applications at any time but recommend applying early fall of your 3rd year of cardiology fellowship. Applications will be reviewed in November prior to the year of matriculation. Interviews with a visit to UCSF are not mandatory but recommended. One applicant, notified in early February, is chosen each year.
The UCSF Heart Center performs 550 catheterizations per year (approximately 70% interventional), and an additional 225 electrophysiology studies. The program has 6 junior fellows (2 per year), 15 faculty cardiologists (3 of whom specialize in catheterization Drs. Teitel, Moore, and Meadows) and two congenital cardiac surgeons who perform approximately 350 surgeries per year. The program has 2 bi-plane cath labs dedicated to congenital heart catheterization with a dedicated cardiac nursing staff. In addition, an angiography MRI combined suite is available for MRI guided catheterization. The 4th year interventional fellow spends 3 days per week performing both diagnostic and interventional catheterizations, both as the primary operator and as an instructor to junior fellows for interventional cases. No scheduled night call is required for the cath lab coverage, although the fellow may be required to take up to 2 weeks per year general cardiology or CICU call.
Research activities are an important component of the fellowship. Participation in ongoing research projects or development of your own new project is possible. Clinical, basic animal physiology, and molecular research opportunities exist. Large and small animal facilities with fully equipped surgical and catheterization laboratory are available on campus. Ongoing projects within the Heart Center include flow dynamics / single ventricle function and development, MRI catheterization, interventional single ventricle palliation, and catheter based intravascular suturing.
