Patient Care

Pediatric cardiologists at UCSF Children’s Hospital provide a center-based approach for the comprehensive diagnosis and management of congenital and acquired cardiac disease. Non-invasive diagnostic modalities include:

  • Echocardiography, including transesophageal and fetal echo
  • Electrocardiography, including Holter monitoring and event recording
  • Magnetic resonance imaging
  • Nuclear scans
  • Ultrafast CT scans
  • Exercise treadmill testing
  • Pacemaker interrogation

In the Pediatric Invasive Electrophysiology Laboratory, our pediatric electrophysiologists perform:

  • Diagnostic studies
  • Catheter ablation of arrhythmias
  • Pacemaker placement

In the Pediatric and Adult Congenital Interventional Catheterization Laboratory, our interventional cardiologists perform:

  • Diagnostic evaluations of congenital and acquired cardiac disease
  • Entire range of catheter-based therapeutic procedures, including:

    • Balloon angioplasty
    • Valvuloplasty
    • Stent dilation
    • Coil occlusion of the ductus arteriosus and other vascular structures
    • Device closure of atrial and ventricular septal defects and of the foramen ovale.

Inpatient care of our patients occurs in our Pediatric Cardiac Transitional and Acute Care Ward and in our contiguous Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit. Our state-of-the-art outpatient Pediatric Heart Center, which opened in May 2002, provides a single location for outpatient evaluation and diagnostic testing of our patients, including preparation for cardiac surgery.
