Message from the Chairman

May 15, 2008

To: Faculty, Fellows & Residents

I am delighted to announce that Dr. Dan West will be our next Residency Program Director starting early September 2008. Dan graduated from the University of Florida in 1986 and was an outstanding intern and resident with us at UCSF from 1986 through 1989. After residency Dan moved to Boston Children's for fellowship training in pediatric hematology-oncology. From 1990 through 1995 Dan was an Instructor at Harvard Medical School and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute where he worked on sarcoma biology with Dr.
Jeffrey Sklar.

In 1992, Dan moved to the University of California Davis and quickly became involved in residency education. He became Director of UCD Residency Training Program in in 1996. Since then he has established himself as one of the most innovative and visionary program directors in the country. He has been a Harvard Macy Institute Scholar in the Harvard Program for Physician Educators and most recently has participated in the Harvard School of Public Health Program in Clinical Effectiveness and has been a Visiting Scholar in the School of Education at Stanford University where he has been working on knowledge theory and other topics. From 2002 through 2005 Dan chaired the Research Task Force of the Association of Pediatric Program Directors. Amongst several honors and awards Dan received the UCD Vice Chancellor¹s Faculty Award for Excellence in 2005.

I look forward to supporting Dan in establishing our training program as one that sets the national agenda for pediatric training through innovation and consistently trains future regional, state and national leaders in pediatric medicine.

Sam Hawgood, MB, BS
Professor of Pediatrics
